EWS partial discharge measurements in great demand

15.6.2016

Partial discharge measurements have been an integral part of our service portfolio for two years. Due to numerous advantages, the EWS partial discharge measurements have become standard for our clients. So far we have measured approximately 70 turbines from the manufacturers Vestas, Enercon and Senvion and have consulted our clients in cases where noticeable abnormalities were found.

For the measurements, the EWS team uses a mobile partial discharge monitoring system. The measuring system functions passively and works with the operating voltage of the medium voltage network. The partial discharge pulses are decoupled from the cable shielding by means of a high frequency converter and then filtered and evaluated.

Advantages of this method:

  • No additional burden for operation resources
  • Less work as with a testing generator
  • Measuring of cable sections up to a length of approx. 2 km is possible
  • Sleeves and terminations can be automatically assessed at the same time

The measurements allow early detection of defects in the system and in the cables and thus prevent unplanned shutdowns of the entire medium voltage network.
