Citizens' wind farm Munderfing celebrates 10 years of successful wind harvest!
The Munderfing wind farm is 75% owned by the municipality, so acceptance of wind energy use and identification with the wind farm is well anchored in the Munderfing population. The wind farm on the ridge of the Kobernaußerwald forest is popular all year round as a local recreation area and excursion destination and so, despite rain and storms, around 500 guests came to the wind farm for its anniversary celebration with many attractions and highlights.
These included an 80m crane, which took the brave to lofty heights, while others took a look inside a wind turbine or took part in the puzzle rally, for which three wind turbine climbs were raffled off as the main prizes. For children, there was an extensive hands-on program with a bouncy castle, photo station and the “Wild Wind” children's program. At an information stand on the planned wind farm expansion project, interested parties were able to ask the project partners questions and obtain detailed information.
An all-round success story
The six wind turbines in the Kobernaußerwald, which are located on land owned by the Austrian Federal Forestry Office, generate 40 million kWh of clean wind power every year, which corresponds to the electricity consumption of around a third of the households in the entire Braunau district. In the last 10 years, the impressive amount of around 340 million kWh has been produced. An absolute top result that far exceeded forecasts. In particular, the sixth and most powerful Vestas V136 wind turbine with a hub height of 166m and an installed capacity of 3.45 MW, which went into operation in the fall of 2022, is delivering great results. In 2023, it actually generated 10,354,026 kWh, which is 51% more electricity than the output of the other wind turbines.
The income from the Munderfing wind farm can be used to implement many projects for the population, such as the expansion of the fiber optic network, school renovations and educational and childcare facilities.
Clear commitment to the existing Munderfing wind farm and also to the expansion project
The 10-year success story of the citizen`s windfarm Munderfing literally calls for a continuation or, more specifically, an expansion of the wind farm.
The mayors of the municipalities in the project expansion area - Maria Schmolln, St. Johann am Walde, Lengau, Schalchen and Munderfing - who were also present at the anniversary celebration, as well as the political representatives of all parties represented in the provincial government and the project partners of the expansion project Energie AG Oberösterreich, Österreichische Bundesforste and EWS made a clear commitment to the existing Munderfing wind farm and the expansion project.
The planning and implementation of up to a further 19 wind turbines in the Kobernaußerwald is currently being worked on in close cooperation with the five municipalities.
